Mostly G&S was created in 2009 to bring together people interested in singing operetta. Although specifically formed to sing the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, there is the occasional dalliance into the works of other much-loved operetta composers such as Franz Lehár and Johann Strauss. All of our performances are in concert format, sung in theatre. We like it this way because we can concentrate just that bit harder on the music.
Nevertheless we sing without scores and audiences have come to expect a little frisson of movement and a side dish of narrative to assist the evening along!
We stage two productions a year, in the spring and in the autumn.
In 2018 we became a committee run group, thus allowing members to become more than just a singing voice and input their ideas for the future especially at our AGM.
Barrie has been a choral singer all his life, performing with church and chamber choirs and choral societies in a wide range of music.
Joining Reading Operatic society in 1990 was a real life-changing moment and he remains hooked on G&S to this day.
He has sung principal roles in many of the operettas and lists Sir Despard Murgatroyd in Ruddigore as probably his favourite.
Though now conducting, he remains available for hire as a specialist Pish Tush!
Chairman, Narration and Scripting
Jeff has performed opera, operetta and oratorio since his school days, where he also first encountered the Savoy Operas. Since then he has appeared in more than 30 different G&S roles including most of the principal tenor parts.
He has played both Mr Cox and Mr Box before, but not in the same performance!
Jeff has scripted and narrated the majority of the Mostly G&S shows and restored many 'lost numbers' to the music performed.
Soprano Jess has been a member of Mostly G&S for several years.
She began singing at an early age, joining her church choir at ten and performing with Reading Operatic Society from sixteen.
She has performed many principal roles as well as having sung ensemble.
Jess has a great love of Mostly G&S and is passionate about helping to bring an outstanding performance to our audience.

Claire has been a member of the society since 2014. She joined after watching several performances and really liked how friendly everyone seemed and she was not disappointed.
Having very little experience, Claire was overjoyed to soon settle in and can now be seen getting involved with many aspects of the society!
